(1) USS Razorback (SS-394)
USS Razorback (SS-394), a Balao-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the razorback, a species of whale (Balaenoptera physalus) found in the far southern reaches of the Pacific Ocean. It is arguably the longest-serving submarine still existing in the world, having been commissioned by two different countries for 53 years of active duty. In 2004, the state of Arkansas adopted the submarine, although it was not named after the University of Arkansas mascot.

After the war she remained active with the Pacific Fleet serving off Japan and China in early 1948 and again in late 1949. She won the Navy "E" for overall excellence in 1949. In August 1952 she decommissioned incident to conversion to a GUPPY IIA-type submarine. She recommissioned in January 1954 and reported to Submarine Squadron 10 at New London, Conn., for shakedown and training.

The ship also served as a troop transport during the occupation of Japan, leaving San Francisco 5 January 1946 she made four voyages carrying troops to the Pacific stopping at Yokohama, Shanghai, Tsingtao, and other ports in support of American efforts to stabilize the China situation and to occupy Japan.

She sailed for Boston from California early in 1947 for conversion to a combination dependent and troop transport, emerging 28 June and returning to San Francisco. During the next 2 years she operated in the Pacific between Guam and San Francisco, carrying dependents and servicemen to stations in the Far East. Transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) under Navy captain and crew in October 1949, she departed for Norfolk via the Panama Canal and Bermuda, arriving 10 January 1950. She then operated in the Caribbean until 11 April, when she departed for San Diego, California. General H. W. Butner arrived San Diego 24 April, and on 10 May made another Pacific cruise which lasted until her return to the West Coast 12 June.
